US ITC Rules Samsung Did Not Infringe on Nvidia Graphics Chip Patent

The jury is in, so to speak, and the commission has finally ruled that Samsung has not infringed upon Nvidia graphics chip patents. Of course, this situation is nothing new for the mobile technology company as they are frequently under fire from the ITC, having previously been in legal battles with both Apple and Microsoft, as well as the present Nvidia case, over technology in its mobile devices.

And, for this study, the ITC says that Samsung (and partner Qualcomm) did not, in fact, infringe upon patents currently owned by the chip maker Nvidia. Oddly, though, a new development in the case could turn things around though.

Judge Thomas Parker did, in fact, rule that Samsung did not infringe upon two existing Nvidia patents, but that Samsung has actually infringed on a third patent.

So this is actually a complicated matter as the patent might only make sense in a distant technical aspect; in an act known as “patent-trolling”. However, should Nvidia win this case—which does not seem very likely—it could bring some serious implications on Samsung and Qualcomm. Of course, it is important to note that the ruling for this week is still currently under review by the full trade commission and could further be subject to revision.
The final decision is actually not expected until February.

Not surprisingly, Samsung has declined to comment on this development.

In the meantime, Nvidia has requested the worldwide Trade Commission block all shipments of Samsung smartphones and tablets into the United States. Furthermore, Nvidia continues to seek damages from Samsung over the past alleged misuse of technology.
