Hovey Williams named busiest trademark firm in Kansas, Missouri

An industry trade magazine called Intellectual Property Today ranked Overland Park-based Hovey Williams 23rd in the nation for number of trademarks issued in 2014.

Founded in 1929, Hovey Williams LLP was the only law firm in Kansas or Missouri on the magazine’s top 100 list, with most based in New York, Boston, Washington, Atlanta and Southern California.

“We’re honored that our hard work has been recognized with this national listing,” Cheryl Burbach, a partner at Hovey Williams and the leader of the firm’s trademark group, said in a release. “With Kansas City’s rising profile as a center for innovation, we’re glad that we can be a resource for protecting trademarks and other intellectual property for companies here, as well as for our clients across the nation and around the world.”

A trademark is a word, design or device that identifies a company or product and differentiates it in the marketplace. So it’s extremely important to businesses, especially in an era of globalization, which has many pitfalls for protection of intellectual property.

Hovey Williams has been in the Top 25 on the list for three years in a row.
