Toyota files for patent for possible flying car

Toyota Motor Corp., which is interested in all sorts of mobility, has filed for a patent that could lead to a flying car.

The application, published in the database of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, covers a “stackable wing for an aerocar,” according to Bloomberg.

The dream of a flying car has spurred inventors and entrepreneurs for decades, but their immense technical complexity has thwarted any from becoming commercially viable.

Among those still pursuing them are Vernon Porter of Murphy, who began working on a concept of a flying car with lifelong friend Clarence Kissell nearly a decade ago.

Porter is displaying a functioning concept of the vehicle but has not flown it.

According to Toyota’s application, the wing can change shape with one configuration for when it is stacked on the car roof and another more aerodynamic shape when it is deployed for flight, Bloomberg said.
